Sulphur Banks (Ha’akulamanu) at Volcanoes National Park

You will be glad that this trail is only 1.2 miles because it is very stinky here. The trail is an easy loop, relatively flat, made of paved ground, dirt paths and boardwalks. When we visited here Yellowstone National Park immediately came to my mind.

The steam is a caused by groundwater mixing with gases that are rich in carbon dioxide,

Sleeping in a Treehouse!

When I asked my husband if he would like to sleep in a treehouse near Volcanoes National Park, he said, “Seriously, you found a treehouse we can stay in?” I said, “Yes, indeed.” He said, “Absolutely!” When I asked my kids, my daughter immediately said, “YES!” My son was a little more skeptical and said,

Hiking Across Kilauea Crater

After we left the anticlimactic lava tube, we headed over to the Kilauea Iki Trail and Overlook. Hiking this trail was the major reason why we choose the Big Island over all the rest. The trail takes you around the top of the 3,000 foot Kilauea Crater,

Our First Glimpse of Halemaumau Crater

We started day 4 by checking out of Castle Hilo and making our way to Volcanoes National Park. It is approximately a 40 minute drive from Hilo. The entrance fee was $10/vehicle and was good for 7 days; the current price (9/2017) is $25/vehicle. We had no trouble finding parking,

Stargazing Above the Clouds at Mauna Kea

Akaka Falls State Park

We started our next morning with another $60 breakfast (I think we may have got it down to $54, we tried at least) at Ken’s House of Pancakes. It was obviously good, as we kept going back trying to lower our breakfast bill each time.

Black Sand, Turtles and Snorkeling, Oh My!

After leaving Wailuku River State Park, we headed to Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine Restaurant in Hilo. We absolutely loved eating here, we returned two more times. The teriyaki pineapple burger was amazing! The drinks were good, the service was fast and the servers funny.

Wailuku River State Park

How can one possibly pass up the opportunity to visit both Rainbow Falls and Peepee Falls in one spot? I absolutely love waterfalls and visit as many as I can, and there was no way I was not going to see Peepee Falls. I also loved using the words “Peepee Falls”
