Hiking Boynton Canyon Vista Trail

The Boynton Canyon Vista Trail, approximately 1.1 mile there and back, is a relatively easy hike with a little climbing of rock steps at the end. (Remember, I had already hiked Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock, so my definition of ‘a little climbing’ might be different than yours.)

There is parking available at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead, you do need a daily park pass to park here. Vault type toilets are located at the parking lot.

To begin, follow the Boynton Canyon Trail. The Boynton Canyon Vista Trail will eventually split off to the right. Pay attention or you will be on a 5.8 mile hike through the canyon. The path is well marked and easy to follow.

The trail ends at a saddle between two spires, which is also the location of the vortex. This vortex is said to contain a balance of masculine and feminine energy. You can attempt to climb either spire. We only went about half way up on each side.

This lovely little cairn was erected in the middle of the vortex. I found myself wondering if it was glued together. Everyone was walking around it very carefully because no one wanted to be responsible for tipping it over.

A Gift From the “Flute Man” in Sedona

During my research for this trip I came across several websites that mentioned a man playing his flute at the vortex and how the music travels all through the canyon. Every mention said the music was beautiful and those who actually met the source of the music said he was an older gentleman who passes out heart shaped rocks and plays his flute almost daily purely for the enjoyment of it. I was really hoping to meet him. We didn’t hear any music hiking in, but when I reached the top of the rock stairs that led to the saddle an elderly gentleman come up to me said, “Hello, I have a gift for you.” I said, “Okay….” Then he handed me the heart shaped rock and I said, “Oh my gosh! You are the flute man! I’ve been hoping to meet you! Are you going to play?” He said that he was just about to leave but he would stay and play one more song for me. I was thrilled. My rock sits on my computer desk, a happy reminder of our trip and of people who perform daily acts of kindness.

This hike was beautiful, a little more remote than the first two we went on, and much easier. I would have liked to linger here longer but we had one more hike that we wanted to complete before sunset, the Airport Mesa Trail. As always, wishing you happy travels and fantastic adventures in this thing called life.
